ARTIST ROOMS: Richard Long
Exhibition continues until 17 December 2011
Abbot Hall Art Gallery
Since the late 1960s Long has made work in the landscape. His art of making walks in the natural world led him to be one of the most prominent and pioneering artists of his generation, extending art beyond the boundaries of the gallery setting. The artist records his walks, and the discreet sculptures he makes along the way through photography, maps and text works that together explore his relationship and engagement with places. He has also used natural materials such as slate, flint or sticks to make floor-based sculptures and frequently integrates mud into drawings and wall-works.
The works on display are taken from ARTIST ROOMS, a new collection of modern and contemporary art held by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland for the nation, including River Avon Mud, Slow Hand Spiral and Cornish Slate Ellipse which will be remade by Long. Also featuring new work chosen
by Long.
